Named for Dr. James Cook Ayer, who helped provide funding for the town hall’s construction, Ayer was incorporated in 1871 after a boom of rapid development. From the first mill built in 1667 to grind corn to the railroad construction in the mid-19th century, Ayer’s small size beat the odds and it became an important commercial center.

Today, Ayer’s tiny-but-mighty mindset continues. Boasting a historical downtown area, modernized rail services, and a tight-knit community, Ayer turns its focus toward the well-being of the families that live there, as well as protection of their natural resources.
