Named after William Alexander Sterling, a Scottish lord who helped the colonists residing in what was then known as Chocksett, Sterling made its mark as an agricultural community of settlers. While Sterling’s small-town charm remains, its population has grown rapidly since 1950, but it remains a tight-knit community with plenty of history attached to its land.

Sterling has had many prominent residents over the years: Lt. Joel Pratt, who aided George Washington during the revolution; Ebenezer Butterick, who developed dress patterns for the masses, and Mary Sawyer, who along with her pet lamb inspired the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”
