Hearing Loss and Loneliness: The Unlikely Connection and Shocking Risks

Hearing Loss and Loneliness: The Unlikely Connection and Shocking Risks

by | Jan 14, 2025 | Hearing Health

Hearing well isn’t just important for our listening and communication skills—hearing loss has been linked to an increased risk of harmful falls, dementia, social isolation, and other serious health outcomes.

A CNN Health article references a study from 2023 wherein, after a meta-analysis of 90 studies, people who experienced social isolation are shown to have a 32 percent higher risk of premature mortality. It’s a horrifying conclusion—but one that’s all too real in today’s world.

The study also shares how loneliness and social isolation are considered chronic stressors, leading to antagonistic health outcomes. Prolonged feelings of loneliness act as chronic stress, triggering the release of stress hormones that negatively affect the body.

Connections between people are necessary for us as humans; we’re social creatures in need of connection and community, and without it we grow withdrawn and isolated from the world. Hearing loss can add fuel to that lonely fire without us realizing it fully.

It’s crucial to look after our hearing to help us maintain those connections with the people we rely on to keep us safe and happy in our communities. From family and friends to loved ones and even strangers, communication is key!

I’ve seen so many patients come to our clinic feeling nervous and even skeptical that hearing care could help them succeed, especially if their family members or loved ones told them to get their hearing tested in the first place.

Hearing care often falls by the wayside when it comes to making annual healthcare appointments; people don’t realize how much their hearing needs help until it starts to affect their day-to-day life. From lost conversations to losing your balance, without prompt treatment, untreated hearing loss can take over and make your independent lifestyle slip away.

As many of our previous patients will tell you, hearing care makes a world of difference. Not only does it optimize your hearing; hearing aids and hearing care have been shown to improve balance, strengthen memory and cognition, and help individuals get back to hearing the voices of the people they love most.
