It’s not news that your ears are connected to far more than just your hearing; hearing loss challenges can affect your balance, your mental health, your social life, and your cognitive abilities.

But before you panic – hearing loss challenges are remarkably easy to treat with professional hearing care, including regular hearing assessments, ear cleanings, and where needed, hearing aids.

Of course, nobody’s jumping at the chance to get their first pair of hearing aids; negative stigmas to do with aging and being seen as old often stop people from seeking out hearing care. Thankfully, those stigmas are changing – and recently I came across a study from early this year that might motivate more people to look into hearing aids.

According to Dr. Janet Choi from the Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California, regular use of hearing aids and assistive devices can increase your life expectancy

With professional hearing care and aids, you can live longer.

How Can Hearing Aids Help Increase My Life Expectancy?

While hearing aids aren’t the one solution to a longer life, Dr. Choi emphasizes that wearing your devices routinely will lower your risk of premature mortality – as well as improved memory, balance, and more independence in your life.

Dr. Choi’s study took almost 10,000 participants and studied how regular use of hearing aids affected them over years of examination. Her findings showed that the patients who used hearing aids regularly had a 24% lower risk of mortality compared to the group that didn’t use hearing aids at all.

But she was surprised to find that outside of her study, just 12% of her participants actively wore their devices.

Hearing loss feels like it comes on suddenly; quite often, individuals with hearing loss challenges don’t realize they’re struggling until someone points it out to them. Even then, we see patients who don’t adapt to wearing their hearing aids regularly and don’t see any benefit in wearing them at all.

Wearing your devices each day is part of your routine that should be as banal as brushing your teeth – something that you do each day that you almost don’t think about but benefits you each day you do it.

Dr. Choi, a hearing aid wearer herself, hopes that her study will help encourage more people to get hearing aids and boost those that have devices but perhaps don’t wear them as often to wear them more regularly.

Advanced hearing aid technology has come far from the clunky devices of old – nowadays, many modern devices are entirely invisible!

Professional hearing care, as well as hearing aids, can make a huge difference to your world when taken seriously. And if you’re reading this, we hope you know now too.
